The aquaculture sector develops rapidly under policy support

2020-11-28

On the 26th, Ying Jieshang, director of the National Fisheries Administration of Cambodia, said at a press conference on post-disaster agricultural reconstruction work at the Prime Minister’s Office that the national aquaculture volume will increase by about 30% this year, which can meet domestic market demand.

He said that despite this, Cambodia still needs to import 15,000 tons of seafood every year. Because of the incomplete species of seafood farming in Cambodia, such as large squid, large lobster, sea crab, salmon and tuna and other fishery resources are scarce, it cannot meet the demand of foreign tourists for the best seafood.

Yingjieshang said that the Royal Government and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have been paying close attention to the national aquaculture work. In the past 5 years, the average annual growth rate of the Cambodian aquaculture industry was 20%. With the strong support of the government, national aquaculture will increase by 30% in 2020, which is equivalent to an increase of 400,000 tons of production.

He said that in order to continue to promote the development of aquaculture, the Royal Government allocated 500,000 U.S. dollars to help farmers in 10 provinces across the country raise catfish and eels. So far, the Fisheries Administration has helped more than 1,000 aquaculture farmers successfully raise eels. Subsequently, farmers in the five provinces around Tonle Sap will also obtain breeding technology.

Yingjieshang added that the bureau still has financial assistance from the Australian Alliance to support the national aquaculture sector. The main aquaculture species are catfish and frogs, and an estimated 2,200 families can benefit from it.
